Processing Africa-Part 6 -Retreat Day One-Not what I was expecting

sunset, beach, sea

This retreat began like many others, with the initial sign-in marking the start of what we anticipated would be a transformative experience. However, the atmosphere shifted when the first woman to arrive seemed visibly embarrassed, ultimately leaving the room in tears. While not an uncommon response, it sparked a sense of concern.

Sensing her distress, I approached her by the pool, offering a listening ear and reassurance. As we conversed, she revealed that she had come with a few friends, expressing both shyness and excitement about being there.

The following morning, a concerning incident unfolded as reports emerged of someone by the ocean exhibiting unusual behavior and asking perplexing questions. As discussions ensued among volunteers and other attendees, it became clear that intervention was necessary and security was called in.

I was tasked with ensuring her physical and emotional safety, I found myself navigating a situation I hadn’t encountered in quite some time although not the first time and only time. Despite the initial challenges, we managed to address the situation effectively. In the end the whole ordeal lasted a few days. No one was hurt and many prayers were made.

I was told afterwards that it was very good that I was there because they had never encountered anything like this before.
